S~ Phantom & EZ,
It is always hard to make a change and this is no different. You have my support and I will offer to assist in transition efforts and on-going squad operations needs as my time and ability will allow.
As I think of ideas or needs or whatever, I will try to put them out on the table to you for consideration. As one who is neither all that smart or creative, I have found that the best method of generating ideas are to swipe them from others whom we respect. A great complement to the swipee for sure
Toward that end, I have noticed the following practices that are best practices:
1. Some squads are awarding medals and campaign ribbons to members for various activities. That might be too labor intensive, but was one idea to give members a greater sense of belonging as well as incentive to participate. Alpha has a system that is automatic, I think for a campaign he is running. Not sure how it works.
2. Most really active squads have a regular squad night for training and/or challenge missions against agressor groups. We have done some of that and it is something that bears repeating.
3. Periodic challenges to other squads for fun and dominance of the sky. We did this with tangmere a while back with KG and NJG boys and it was a hoot and the participation was great. We can take on 609 or others either in fun missions or private FS missions as our desires lead us.
4. The teamwork and communications of the JG51 is a model to aspire to as we get better at our craft.
5. The website of the Redwulfs is impressive and one of the better ones that I have seen.
6. Obviously, as a volunteer org. it is difficult to expect military style discipline or that level of order as we all do this for fun right?
Besides, fighter pilots even in the luftwaffe were not known for being all that formal when it comes to military courtesy or discipline. Along those lines, any regular, repeatable activity that encourages and rewards participation and adds to the fun factor is a way to up the bar and increase squad efficiency in combat.
7. I have seen some squads that have a section where each pilot posts a write up about him/herself and how or why they got into flying sims or got interested in aviation in general. Many also post a pic to put an ugly mug with the call sign. This may or may not appeal but seemed a way to get to know each pilot better.
8. While a little bit pricey for small orders, I have a friend who prints tee-shirts for events, etc. If we have anyone with the talent to put the artwork together, I could take shirt orders and get us a squad shirt made.
9. Once each year in Texas, JG51 meets for a LAN party. This year they invited the FS regulars. It was a face to face event with food, Gumbo, german beer and steaks to feed the masses as well as an all weekend long flight operations session at a local airport. Sound like fun? Yeah, I know we come from all over, but is still a possibility if we want to get ambitious? Say, the weekend of the Dayton Air Show? Set up and fly at night and attend the show and hit the Wright Patterson Air Museum during the day? A tall order for sure but one to consider. I have been lucky enough to meet a couple of our comrades in person over the years and can safely say that these are guys that I can be friends with and have a great deal in common with. Maybe the next time we have it near the Canadian Air museum in Ottawa? and alternate? Maybe Duxford? Obviously, I am getting out of hand, (slap, smack!) oh there, now I am back to reality.
Well, enough chatter from me, big Salute to Phantom for successful and consistent leadership and S~ to EZ for stepping up and taking the reins of these wild horses
